Every year we help the Christie Hospital produce an annual review of the year that highlights the achievements and milestones of the past 12 months. Each time, we are challenged to do something different to avoid viewer fatigue and ensure patients are front and centre of the film.
While previous films have featured presenters, staff and management, we really wanted patients to do ALL the talking this year. However, presenting a film is not an easy task! So we came up with an idea to film directed conversations between patients, to illustrate key themes like quality of care, research and innovation. These conversations would be enhanced by relevant onscreen graphic text. We worked with the hospital to identify patients whose stories would help illustrate achievements and created pairings with common ground to facilitate the conversations. We developed questions they could ask each other and spent time ahead of the shoot explaining the process to put them at ease.
Filming was not without its challenges! The Queen’s death, patient illness and COVID restrictions on visiting the hospital meant we had to juggle dates, locations and contributors, sometimes on the day. But with careful direction we were able to capture some wonderful conversations which really helped the achievements of the hospital shine. In post, we added graphic slides to link the stories together and add information. This also allowed us to cut the main film down into shorter films for social media.
The film was incredibly very well received across the trust and beyond. The team say of Dependable “They are always sensitive to the subject matter and when dealing with both patients and staff. They understand our objectives and the constraints we are under and offer options about the approach we need to take to achieve these. They are a pleasure to work with and are a trusted and valued contractor”
